Moss Creek HVAC

Fall is in the air! What do you think of when fall comes around? Other than apple pies, rich spices, and falling leaves, it’s also about getting the house ready for winter. That’s right, folks. It’s time to think about servicing your fireplaces, furnaces, and other things.

Furnaces are on the list because neglecting your furnace can be the difference between death and life.

Today, Deborah Elliott-Shultz welcomes Dave Moss of Moss Creek HVAC to discuss the importance of furnaces.

The house fan will tell the tech what kind of condition home is in. Often, techs will see buildup of animal hair and other things. More often than not, a tech will see the dirtiest HVAC systems in homes that have lots of animals or where a house is not kept up. Which is why it’s important to hire great companies like Moss Creek HVAC to come in and clean it up.

How often should a person change out their air filter? According to Dave, every month. Even in the cooling season, A/C, the fan is still going. It’s important to pay attention to what is going on around the neighborhood with new builds, constructions, fires, etc.

Most companies will recommend getting your furnace checked once a year. But Dave Moss recommends having it checked every 6 months because the furnace is changing functions that often. In the spring the heat turns off and the A/C turns on, and in the fall the a/c turns off and the heat comes on. For this reason, Sept-Oct is one of the best times to have it checked. Your HVAC tech should perform a function test, replace the filter, check the fan and listen to the furnace to make sure it’s running the way it should.

There is a new filtration system on the market that does a “Capture and Kill.” Most traditional furnaces use a filter after the air has blown through the fan before going into the ducts. This new filtration system grabs everything as it comes into the return registers, before it ever gets to the furnace system.

Is this new filtration system expensive? How often does the filter need to be changed? It’s around $300 plus the cost of install in most homes. And the filter needs to be replaced every 1-1.5 months. And you don’t need a redundant system, so there’s really only the one filter to change.

As the season changes and the air gets drier, having a whole house humidifier can be beneficial for your skin as well as for any hardwood you have in the house. Our winters can get very dry, and it pulls the moisture out of the wood in the house. Having a humidifier can help the longevity of hardwood floors, cabinetry, stair railings, and anything else made of wood in your home.

If you have a humidifier, please make sure to clean out your humidifier filter every year. There’s a kit you can purchase at hardware stores and it’s something you can do yourself and save a bunch of money. But you can call an HVAC company to clean it, also.

Come listen today to find out why it’s important to make sure your furnace is clean. It has to do with your carbon monoxide. Safety tip: It’s important to have carbon monoxide detectors near the floor because carbon monoxide is a heavy gas.
